Discerning the Times
By A. Wilson Phillips
In 1788, Edward Gibbon wrote
The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. I recently came across this
literary piece in the Christian News periodical.
Gibbon set forth five basic
reasons for the fall of mighty Rome.
First, there was the undermining of the dignity and
sanctity of marriage and the home, which is the basis of human
society. Second, there were higher and higher taxes and the
spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace.
Third, there was a mad craze for pleasure, with sports becoming
every year more exciting, more brutal, and more immoral.
Fourth, there was the building of great armaments when the real enemy
was within; the decay of individual responsibility and sacrifice.
Fifth, there was the decay of religion; faith fading into mere form,
losing touch with life to guide the people.
I hear voices saying America as
a superpower is heading the same direction as the superpower Rome.
History reports that Gibbon
seemed to have considerable insight into the conditions that led to the
fall of mighty Rome. He was not known as a Bible-believing Christian, yet
his work makes me wonder, “Could these things be happening to the America
that we all love?” If so, let me offer some solutions to our nation’s
plight. I speak from my personal belief and trust in the Christian God of
the Bible.
All of us desire to make our
land safe and a better place to live and raise our children and
grandchildren. Our political leaders tell us this daily in many ways. We
are concerned to some degree about life on this earth and life beyond the
grave. I say this because the American spirit must abide by the
Constitution and its amendments, and the spiritual kingdom of God has the
Bible as its constitution and principles by which to live. As believers,
we must use the Bible as our manual for living, follow the pattern son
Jesus, and let the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth.
God sent His Son Jesus from
heaven to earth to do His will as the Son of Man. Jesus began to
declare His interest in spiritual things at age twelve by interacting with
the spiritual leaders in Israel. Children are very perceptive and
sensitive about spiritual things, perhaps much sooner than we give them
credit for. Our children need a greater challenge concerning spiritual
things because of the world they face.
Our heavenly Father trusted
Jesus’ mother Mary and Joseph to be an example and train Him in the ways
of the God of Israel. Alongside of their training, Father God was teaching
Jesus by illuminating truths from the Law, Psalms, and Prophets (Luke
24:44-45). As Jesus was speaking to some Pharisees (religious authorities
who were endeavoring to discredit Him), He said, “I do nothing of
Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things” (John 8:28).
Their pride deceived them. They did not receive Jesus’ words of spirit and
life (John 6:63). He always spoke from God’s perspective on any issue.
In doing the will of our
heavenly Father, Jesus was led to a cross to be the sacrificial Lamb of
God to take away the sin of the world. In the garden scene, Jesus prayed,
“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (Matt. 26:39).
His disciples were sleeping
during this the most crucial time of their discipleship training. Even so,
our sovereign God turned their failures into blessings to accomplish His
will through these disciples.
Are we as disciples of Jesus
“spiritually sleeping”? Are we not discerning the times? Have we become
dull of hearing and have come to need milk and not solid spiritual food?
For everyone who partakes only of milk is
unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food
belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use
have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Heb.
5:13-14).
Failing to discern between good
and evil is destructive to any society or civilization. Remember Rome.
God’s kingdom will continue to
advance with those who are listening to His voice
and
discerning the times. God’s Word and Spirit say the best is yet to come on
planet earth.
My sincere prayer and desire is
that America will not go the way of the mighty Roman Empire. It’s the best
place on earth to live. I want my will in total alignment with my heavenly
Father’s will. It’s the only life worth living today and eternally forever
with Him.

MY
EXPECTATIONS
By Richard K. Clark
My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him (Ps.
62:5).
The
Hebrew word for “expectation” in Psalm 62:5 can also be translated “hope.”
It has been said that a person cannot live long without hope, and
Scripture seems to bear this out. The covenant life that we have with God
through Christ has two basic time dimensions: the now and the eternal. In
Christ we are eternal and participate in the infinite, yet while we live
in these earthly bodies, we have been encompassed by linear time as well.
We live in the now and look forward to the future, therefore expectations
are a necessity for life, and God alone is to be my expectation.
As with anything in life, our
focus matters, and too easily we can lose our focus of the source for hope
and look more to the byproducts. Rather than seeking God, we may seek the
job, or the money, or the relationship, or the assignment … none of which
can meet the needs of our hearts unless they flow out of the intimate
communion we have with the Lord.
God’s children complained to
Moses in the wilderness that they wanted meat to eat instead of the bland
manna. “And He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their
soul” (Ps. 106:15). The moral of their story is timeless—look to
the Lord for true heart fulfillment, satisfaction that can only be
realized in a personal relationship with Jesus.
In the first century, Jesus and
His apostles declared that they were living the last days of the old
covenant world. They went through several years of testing and suffering
with the promise of deliverance in their generation (Matt. 24:34). The
essence of their daily life was “Christ in you, the
hope of glory” (Col. 1:27), yet in their future they were promised
the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ. Paul called this their blessed
hope (Titus 2:13). Their expectation of His coming emanated from their
expectation in Him. “This blessed coming” did take place in their
lifetime.
Unfortunately, there are many
good Christian people today basing their hope on another coming of Christ
in their lifetime. As Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope
deferred
makes the heart sick.” Samuel M. Frost has written a book that
says it all in the title, Misplaced Hope. God wants His children to
have healthy hearts, and one of the ingredients to a healthy heart is
godly hope, which is based on His truth. Expecting something good from God
in our future is not wrong if He has put that expectation in our hearts
and it is based on His Holy Word. We should live with great expectations
in Christ now and in our eternity in Christ.

Substance and Shadows
By Benjamin Davis
Children often have a
fascination with shadows. When I was a child, we would play a game where
we tried to step on each other’s shadow. If you could step on your
friend’s shadow more than he could step on yours, you win. As a parent, it
was fun to lie in a tent with the kids at night and use a flashlight to
project a shadow on my hand that looked like a giant spider slowly
creeping down on them. They knew it was just a shadow, but they loved the
creepiness of it nonetheless.
As a pastor and leader, I find
that many of God’s children remain fascinated with shadows. As a matter of
fact, some get so focused and caught up in shadows that they miss the real
thing entirely.
The apostle Paul was dealing
with this problem when he wrote about the law. His message was that the
law was “…a shadow of things to come, but the substance (body)
is of Christ” (Col. 2:17).
New Testament writers spent
their lives teaching and preaching about the spiritual nature of the
kingdom of God. Jesus plainly said,
…My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom
were of this world, My servants would fight…but now My kingdom is not from
here (John 18:36).
Peter echoed Jesus talking
about the spiritual nature of God’s people:
…you also…are being built up a spiritual
house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Pet. 2:5).
Of the spiritual kingdom, Peter
encouraged:
…for so an entrance will be supplied to you
abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ (2 Pet 1:11).
Today we serve a spiritual
Jesus, in a spiritual kingdom, with a spiritual church, through our
spiritual lives in Christ. This is the reality that casts a shadow in the
world that we see, touch, hear, taste, and smell every day.
One reason God’s children get
caught up and focused on the shadow of this world rather than their
spiritual reality in Christ is because they have a shallow experience with
God. God’s desire for His children is for them to experience Him in a way
that makes Him so real in their lives that they begin to believe in the
spiritual, supernatural world more than their circumstances in the
physical world around them. That was Paul’s goal for those he ministered
to—
And my speech and my preaching were…in
demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in
the wisdom of men but in the power of God (1 Cor. 2:4-5).
Because of their shallow
experience, many Christian leaders today are focusing on the shadow more
than the reality. They are calling for a political kingdom of God focused
on natural Israel. That focus calls for another temple to be built in
Jerusalem, so Jesus can return and animal sacrifices can be made again.
The author of Hebrews wrote of
the futility of this when the Jerusalem temple was still standing in the
first century. The book of Hebrews warns believers not to focus on that
temple, for it was only a shadow of the reality in Christ. According to
Hebrews, the temple and its sacrifices were only a “copy and shadow of
the heavenly things…” They were “a shadow of the good things to
come, and not the very image of the things…” (Heb. 8:5, 10:1).
Today, God is calling His
children to a deeper, more experiential relationship with
Him
in the Spirit. The words of the apostle Paul are still for us today.
Since then you were raised with Christ, seek
those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand
of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you
died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:1-3).

DISCERNING THE SPIRITS
By Jonathan Clark
Nearly two thousand years ago,
the apostle John wrote a letter to believers in the faith. In one
particular passage, he is giving understanding concerning how to discern
different spirits. They were living in the “time of the end” of the old
covenant and the beginning of the fullness of the kingdom of God. Demonic
and satanic activity had been a part of the world they previously lived
in. Here’s how John explained it:
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test
the spirits, whether they are of God… By this you know the Spirit of
God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh
is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has
come in the flesh is not of God… They are of the world. Therefore, they
speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who
knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know
the spirit of truth and the spirit of error (1 John
4:1-6).
As I listen to the apostle
explain about different spirits, it becomes evident that he is giving
understanding about how individuals manifest their spirit. Discernment is
necessary to determine if a person is manifesting the Lord or his/her self
(flesh).
At the time John wrote this
letter, Satan and his forces had already been defeated. God’s covenant
people would no longer be hassled by the demonic forces of darkness. So
the emphasis in John’s revelation to the church is on discerning good and
evil—discerning God versus self. Another inspired writer, James, described
this when he wrote:
But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking
in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does
not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where
envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are
there (James 3:14-16).
The apostles were explaining to
God’s new covenant people that their biggest opposition wasn’t going to be
the demonic forces of Satan, for they had been bound, defeated, and done
away with. The apostles warned that the biggest struggle in the new
covenant kingdom would be discerning the flesh and the world—for anything
not originating from God is evil. Peter learned this the hard way when
Jesus referred to him as Satan shortly after acknowledging Peter’s divine
revelation from God:
But He (Jesus) turned and said to Peter,
“Get behind Me, Satan! …for you are not mindful of the things of God, but
the things of men” (Matt. 16:23).
Peter’s correction by Jesus
demonstrates the growth process that new creation people must go through
after they receive God’s new life. As they are willing to die to their
flesh, they must renew their minds and emotions to be conformed to the
image of Christ. This will keep them free from manifesting an ungodly
(evil, demonic) spirit in attitude and conduct.
Apostle John mentioned how to
grow from being an immature, carnal Christian to one who lives free from
evil—he said we must listen to the spiritual authority that God has placed
in our lives. John was very direct as he instructed the believers in First
John 4:6—
We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who
is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and
the spirit of error.
The writer to the Hebrews
explained it this way:
For though by this time you ought to be teachers,
you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of
God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who
partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is
a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is,
those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both
good and evil (Heb. 5:12-14).
Paul also dealt with the growth
process of the new creation people at Corinth. He was exhorting and
correcting them to grow from selfish carnality into mature believers who
live above fleshly and worldly evil.
…But we have the mind of Christ. And I, brethren,
could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to
babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until
now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able;
for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and
divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?
(1 Cor. 2:16-3:3)
Two thousand years later, we
who are in Christ are also living in the same new creation truths that
Jesus, Paul, James, and John wrote about. We have been freed from Satan
and his demonic forces, for they have been bound and defeated!
Many
still blame the devil for evil manifestations in our postmodern world;
however, there is enough evil in the heart of fallen humanity to bring
about the “ungodliness” that we see around us. As we are willing to die to
our flesh, renew our minds and emotions, and act on God’s Word, we will
live free from fleshly evil and worldly evil. By the Spirit of God, the
Word of God, and the people of God, we will be able to discern good and
evil in our present world.

REAL RAPTURE
By Ed Gibson
As the son of Baptist
missionaries, I grew up in a spiritually rich environment. Often hearing
the word of God proclaimed, I understood many facets of our faith.
However, early on I struggled with the teaching on the “rapture.” The
rapture concept exposed insecurities that I had in my relationship with
God. No matter how my parents assured me that I was secure in Christ, I
feared missing out on one of the biggest events in human history. There
were even a couple of times as a child when I could not locate my parents
and briefly feared that I had been left behind.
As I grew up, I began to fear
the rapture less and less and actually looked forward to it. I continually
wished God would deliver me from a number of unpleasant circumstances,
some of which I was in because of my laziness or irresponsibility. I never
realized how much this expectation to be whisked away affected my
planning, my vision, and my hope.
As an adult, I began to realize
that I was missing out on the present life God had for me because my focus
was always set on the future. God began to show me that He had already
“raptured” me out of my problems. He did it at the cross.
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism
into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of
the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life (Rom.
6:4).
My problematic old man was
buried with Christ, and I have been raised in Christ’s resurrection to
experience newness of life today. When God revealed this to me, I felt an
immense sense of relief! What am I waiting for? I can live to be all that
God has called me to be today. Nothing can hold me back but wrong
thinking.
It may seem that I am merely
doing some theological positioning, or esoteric mind-over-matter type
thinking. However, when God revealed to me that His Word was more real
than my feelings, I began to experience what the apostle Paul
experienced—resurrection (raptured) life today. God did not remove the
problems from Paul’s life. God removed Paul from his problems. He did this
by placing Paul and all things on Christ at the cross. God is not going to
remove my problems from me. He has already removed me from my problems!
This is REAL RAPTURE today!

THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND
By Shari Tyson
I was dusting a picture frame
the other day, and Holy Spirit began a conversation with me. I wasn’t
expecting Him to speak; I wasn’t even thinking about the trials in my
life; I was just dusting. “That picture looks so much prettier with new
mats, doesn’t it? Isn’t it amazing that the same print can look so
differently simply by reframing it!” I stopped dusting and stood before
the picture. Holy Spirit was making a point. He was bringing me back to a
truth I had known for years but had not implemented in my recent
circumstances.
Having had my faith tested by a
fire that I felt would consume me, I allowed my picture of God to be
framed by my hurt. That, of course, led to further despair that led to
months of desperate soul searching. A line in a song I had heard said it
all, “How can I go on if I can’t find You?”
The particular picture Holy
Spirit was using to get my attention was a print I had purchased while
visiting my youngest sister one summer. When I returned home, I had it
framed. I took my time choosing the mats and frame, but when I saw the
completed work, I was terribly disappointed. The colors that looked pretty
in the small samples now looked garish. Suddenly, the print I had so liked
was almost ugly. I didn’t have the money to redo it and decided I would
adjust to it once it was hanging on my wall. But I didn’t… it stayed ugly,
and I felt the same frustration every time I saw it.
After several years, I decided
to reframe the print. This time, I was very happy with the finished work.
Now when I passed the picture, I enjoyed looking at it. And that is
precisely what Holy Spirit wanted me to realize.
The print itself was always the
same. What made that print ugly and an aggravation to me at one time and
then lovely and a joy to me later was how I had chosen
to frame it.
Circumstances may be out of my
control, but how I frame those circumstances will always be
in my control. Just as I had the opportunity to choose the matting and
frame for my print, I have the opportunity to choose the thoughts and
words for my circumstances. That’s exactly why Paul said to the
Philippians, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice!”
No matter how desperate,
painful, or overwhelming my circumstances may be, the only difference
between hope and despair may simply be two words: “Thank you.” Choosing to
frame my life with gratitude has the potential to change what really
needed to be changed in the first place…me.
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the
sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks
to His name (Heb. 13:15).

MY CHILDREN
BELONG TO HIM
By Tara Cook
My husband Rusty and I had been
married about five years when we believed the Lord desired for us to start
a family. His desire became our desire. My doctor explained to me that I
would need medication to conceive. However, before I started any fertility
drugs, I became pregnant.
From the beginning, God showed
me this was His child. So when the doctor told me at eight weeks that the
baby had some serious problems, God’s peace was there. We went through the
holiday season not knowing exactly what God was going to do. We had to
consider the possibility of raising a severely retarded child. The medical
professionals gave us the option of aborting. We continued to “trust in
the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding.”
On December 29, God in His
mercy totally “healed” the baby and stopped her heartbeat.
During this time, the Holy
Spirit renewed our minds daily that everything that happens to us has a
purpose and is intended for our good. We continued to be led by the Lord,
and six months later, I was pregnant again—this time with twins!
I felt great during my
pregnancy and even played the drums in a contemporary Christian band a
couple of times a week. However, at 29 weeks gestation, I went into
premature labor and was admitted to St. John’s Hospital. As I lay in that
hospital room for the next five weeks, it was a daily battle to keep my
mind on the truth. I knew God was in control. He was using this
circumstance to cause me to trust Him at a deeper level. He created the
babies and was the only one who could sustain their lives. When fear or
negative emotions would arise in me, I would “dial down,” bring my
thoughts in line with His truth, and experience His peace and joy. My twin
boys were born very healthy at 34 weeks.
Three years later, I delivered
a healthy baby girl after a “normal” full-term pregnancy.
God has burned deeply in my
spirit that my children belong to Him. Now that they are teenagers, I’m
learning at a deeper level how to trust Him with their lives and that He
truly does love them more than I do.

BEYOND “COMMON” SENSE
By Christa Clark
My high school daughter hears
much of the same information, advice, and questions that I heard at her
age—words about her future. Educators, peers, and acquaintances offer
ideas about how to get on the fast track to success. World systems of
thought concerning academics, sports, musical talents, careers, etc., are
drilled into the conscious and subconscious mind at an early age.
As early as fourth grade, I
thought I knew exactly what I wanted to do in life. To promote me and my
agenda, I used common sense, made good grades, worked hard, got involved
in several activities, planned to go to college, and attempted to have
everyone like me. I knew God but never thought to stop and ask Him what He
wanted for my life. However, during my senior year in high school, God got
my attention.
When I surrendered to the Lord
and put my future in His hands, He redirected me, going against
conventional wisdom somewhat.
Trust in the Lord
with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths (Prov.
3:5-6).
As I quieted my heart and
simply asked Him for direction, the Lord would put thoughts in my spirit
and confirm them in the Word of God. He also placed spiritual leaders in
my life who helped me discern truth.
The world has avenues to
achieve success in the flesh; however, the flesh is never satisfied. It
has an insatiable appetite for money, power, and acceptance.
In the kingdom of God, our
needs are met. Beyond our basic needs, the Lord gives us eternal peace,
joy, contentment, and true wealth as we put Him first and do His will.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His
righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (Matt.
6:33).
...the kingdom of God is… righteousness and peace
and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 14:17).
Throughout high school, many good-hearted people
will continue to give my daughter advice on how to “make her dreams come
true.” She is learning to receive their words but then consult the Great
Advisor—for only He can put faith in her heart, and it takes faith to “get
out of the boat and walk on water.”
You will show me the path of life… (Ps.
16:11).
Good ol’ common sense is better
than no sense, but God wants to impart wisdom that goes beyond how the
world thinks. Those who follow the Lord’s life plan enter into the
promised land, demonstrate kingdom living, and solve world problems.
Sovereign God strategically places them in positions of influence to
implement His divine design.
…He has made from one blood every nation of men
to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their
preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings… for in Him we
live and move and have our being… (Acts 17: 26, 28).

IN-DEPTH STUDY
To maintain victorious
lives, we must have ongoing communion with the Scriptures and the Holy
Spirit. God renews our minds and strengthens our foundations by revealing
Himself to us through the Spirit and the Word.
According to Second
Peter 1:20-21, the Holy Spirit moved on holy men of God, and they wrote
the Scriptures. These men were not spectacular in any way. They simply had
learned to obey God through their sufferings and wrote as they felt led by
the Spirit. Because the words were authored by the Holy Spirit, they are
alive and powerful (Heb. 4:12).
God’s Spirit continues
to speak to ordinary people today. He anoints writers to produce materials
that aid us in our study of His Word. When using these materials, it is
essential to be “Berean” in our learning and search the Scriptures daily
to discern the truth (Acts 17:11).
The Abundant Life

Healthy Living
By Angie Gibson
I saw a poster recently that
said, “Americans are overfed and undernourished.” I thought how true that
was for both the physical and spiritual realm. We can have our “stomachs”
filled and yet not meet any of the nutritional needs of our bodies or
spirits. Filled but not fed…Garbage in, garbage out…We are what we eat.
For the past many years, my
family and I have been learning the importance of eating whole,
unprocessed foods and experiencing the benefits in how we feel and how we
overcome common physical problems. While I have always considered the
spiritual diet to be of more importance, as I have gained more experience
in the physical area, I see more clearly how the spiritual supercedes the
natural diet. Scripture even tells us that it is the spirit of man that
sustains him in sickness (Prov. 18:14).
One day the Holy Spirit spoke
to my spirit:
…man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives
by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord
(Deut. 8:3).
Pre-packaged, processed,
easy-to-swallow, great-tasting religious words—common in our culture—are
not feeding God’s people. These lack the essential nutrients needed to
build strong, vibrant spiritual lives. What I cannot live without, what
will meet my deepest need is to hear the voice of my God. I must feed on
words of spirit and life every day.
Because economies (and many
other things) can change in a heartbeat, I cannot always be guaranteed the
resources to maintain what I might consider a healthy physical diet.
However, my hope is not in what is perishable but imperishable. My spirit
can never be harmed, and the truth can never be taken from me. My inner
man can stay as healthy and strong as ever if I am eating the right stuff.
That’s healthy living!
